National Honor Society Cadets Take Part in State Convention...

The Wentworth Military Academy high school chapter of National Honor Society will be presenting two workshops at the state NHS convention at Tan-Tar-A Resort at Lake Ozark, Missouri. One workshop is titled "Life at a Military High School." The second workshop is on flag ettiquette and being an International student at a Missouri high school.

Cadets departed campus on Tuesday, March 6, 2012 after breakfast and will return on Wednesday, March 7, 2012, around supper time.

Wentworth International Students Travel to Missouri Capitol...

MAJ Cristhina Starke is taking a group of international cadets to Jefferson City today to take part in International Day at the Missouri State Capitol.

Last year only 4 College students attended this event. This year Starke is taking 9. It is a good opportunity for them to learn more about Missouri.

Over 400 international students from all over MO will be attending the event. Many MO Colleges and Universities will be represented there.

This event is part of the Study Missouri - international Education Initiatives.

Our students will be there representing Wentworth Military Academy & College, and their home countries.

Starke would like to thank Col Casey and 1SG Willis for their support and assistance in making this trip happen for these successful cadets.

Wentworth Band and Color Guard Performs at Comets Indoor Soccer Game...

The Wentworth Military Academy & College Band and Color Guard performed at the Kansas City Comets indoor soccer game last weeked prior to the professional match. The cadet members of the band and color guard performed outstandingly and represented Wentworth very honorably.

The Comets game was just one of several activities that kept the cadets busy for the entire weekend.

Great job CPT Love, MAJ Fiora and all the band and color guard members!

Taking Advantage of Various Activities...

Over the past month, scuba diving classes were offered to the cadets and many of them took advantage of the opportunity.

The cadets of the 132nd Corps of Cadets that chose to take advanatage of the scuba diving course spent two weekends during the past month to receive professional instruction to become certified as scuba divers.

The scuba diving course was just one of many activities that took place over the weekend. Other activities included the Valentine's Day Dance and a trip to Kansas City where the band and colorguard performed at the KC Comets (Professional) Indoor Soccer match.

Students Get Help Applying for Federal Financial Aid at FAFSA FRENZY...

Next school year, the U.S. Department of Education will make more than $150 billion in postsecondary financial aid available to students throughout the nation. College Goal Sunday (CGS) makes applying for financial aid easier by providing students with free help filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the first step in applying for federal financial aid and many state programs.

The Missouri Association of Student Financial Aid Personnel and the Missouri Department of Higher Education are partnering closely to bring the CGS program, called FAFSA Frenzy, to Missouri for 2012. To assist students and parents with the FAFSA process, financial aid professionals will be on hand at 36 FAFSA Frenzy events on the main event date, Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012. Thirteen additional FAFSA Frenzy events will be held throughout January, February and March. Dates, times and locations for all events are available at http://www.dhe.mo.gov/ or www.masfap.org/showmetocollege.

Scholarships will be drawn for students attending the event in Missouri. Winners will receive their scholarships upon receipt of enrollment verification for the 2012 fall semester at a Missouri postsecondary institution.

Families will be able to complete the 2012-13 FAFSA on-site and obtain valuable information.

2012 FAFSA Frenzy events will mark the ninth year that Missouri has participated in CGS. In the past eight years, CGS/FAFSA Frenzy has helped more than 7,300 Missouri students obtain financial aid.

The QM Store Upgrades Merchandise...

The Quartermaster at Wentworth Military Academy & College has ramped up its merchandise over the past few months to include many new items and great gift ideas. Captain Chris Fiora has worked very hard to give the store a fresh look and better quality items and it has made a big difference.

Several factors have helped CPT Fiora give the QM a new look.

The new contract with Adidas has given a major upgrade to the clothing items.
A commitment to branding Wentworth which includes a new school crest and athletics logo and official colors of (Adidas) Cardinal Red and White.
A commitment to giving all students, parents and alumni a variety of Wentworth items to improve their shopping experience.

CPT Fiora is currently looking at opportunities to sell merchandise online as well.

Wentworth Military College Coach Travels to the Islands...

Over the Christmas break, Wentworth Head College Volleyball Coach and Activities Director Lindsey Mesner traveled to the island of American Samoa to recruit students for Wentworth and to attend the annual Samoa Bowl festivities. “Traditionally Wentworth draws many American Samoans who want to do their coursework at a military school and participate in ROTC,” Mesner commented, “currently seven percent of our campus enrollment are students who call the island home, and there are more Samoan students who currently come from homes in cities across the lower 48 United States.”

Samoa Bowl is an annual week long athletic competition where teams from American Somoa, Hawaii and even a California participate in volleyball, softball and baseball tournaments competing for “island rights” in the South Pacific Ocean. The main event (and reason the bowl week initially began) is a football game between all-star teams from American Samoa and Hawaii, both areas with outstanding football athletes. The festivities leading up to the football game that Coach Mesner attended included the opening ceremonies held at Tafuna High School, volleyball team practices at American Samoa Community College, dinner hosted by Governor Tulafono, Samoa Bowl volleyball tournament matches at American Samoa Community College, dinner hosted by Governor Tulafono’s wife, dinner hosted by Congressman Eni’s staff and also toured the island with her hosts Paul and Pamata Von Dincklage who are the parents of current student and college volleyball player Pamalyeen Von Dincklage.

Coach Mesner noted “Volleyball and football are definitely the most prominent sports on the island of American Samoa, everyone and I mean everyone has a volleyball net in their yard or village and everywhere we drove you would see people outside playing. Football is the other main sport on the island and if there was an open park or yard available that did not have a volleyball net, then there were people of all ages playing football, from youth practices to young adults and teens throwing the ball around.” Coach Mesner also stated that the hospitality on the island was some of the best that she’s ever experienced. “My hosts, the chairman of the Samoa Bowl Committee, Peter Gurr, Governor Tulafono and everyone else I met on the island welcomed me with open arms. The island is really a very friendly place and everyone I encountered was very interested to hear more about Wentworth and the process of applying for and attending college. I also spoke with parents, family members and friends of our current students and they were very excited to hear about how the Corps of Cadets was enjoying their time at Wentworth and all about everything they had experienced so far this year.”

Missouri State Senator David Pearce Visits Wentworth Campus...

Missouri State Senator, David Pearce, visited the Wentworth Campus last week to meet with Colonel William W. Sellers, Colonel Mike Lierman, and several other members of the Wentworth Military Academy and College administration and Lexington Community.

The day for the Senator started with a breakfast in Col. Sellers office before the Senator toured the campus.

It was a great honor for Wentworth to have Senator Pearce take the time to visit our campus and learn more about the 132 years of history at Wentworth Military Academy and College.

Wentworth Represents at 2nd Annual Caitlyn LeClerc Leadership Memorial Bowling Tournament...

Several members of the Wentworth Military Academy and College staff, faculty, family members, and the 132nd Corps of Cadets recently gathered in Leavenworth, Kans. to celebrate and honor the life of our beloved 2LT Caitlyn V LeClerc.

LeClerc dided in a tragic car accident in 2010 and the way that she lived her life remains an inspiration to others.

The 1st Annual "Caitlyn LeClerc Leadership Memorial Bowling Tournament" held in 2010 raised over $5,000. In doing so, two scholarships were awarded to individuals who mirrors Caitlyn's attitude, morals, and goals. It is the hopes of the tournament directors to continue to raise more money and to touch more lives in Caitlyn's name.

Cadet participants in the bowling tournament were: Cadets Josh Bryant, Cody Wainer, Patrick Melvin, Piotr Drwal, and Andrea Willis. Staff and Faculty participants were: Mike Bellis, Pam Ratliff, Ed Stryker, Lindy Anne Johnson, and Becky Markley. SROTC Staff participants were: Darren and Hannah Fitz Gerald and their son, Tim and Cody Zach.

Some of the highlights of the tournament for Wentworth Military Academy & College were as follows:

The Wentworth Military Academy & College Cadets took 2nd place in overall team score.
High scorer was Cadet Josh Bryant
Mike Bellis was high scorer on faculty/staff team
Darren Fitz Gerald was high scorer on SROTC team.
Piotr Drwal had never held a bowling ball before and his first release resulted in a strike.

It was a great day of bowling and fun. But, more importantly it was a great celebration for a wonderful young woman whose infectuous smile and love for life touched so many others. 2LT Caitlyn V. LeClerc's memory lives on at Wentworth Military Academy & College.

Red Dragons Athletics Continues Upgrades...

Wentworth Military Academy and College would like to announce the launch of its brand new athletic website. You can now find updated rosters, schedules, scores and stories about all Wentworth Military Academy and College sports at Red Dragons Athletics. Wentworth Military Academy and College joined forces with SIDEARM SPORTS to give fans of the Red Dragons a cutting-edge platform on which to follow the athletic department.

“The public's first impression of an athletic department is often its athletic website,” said LTC Tom Hughes, Director of Athletics. “Major Seals (Information Technology Director) and Major Farley (Public Relations Officer) did a wonderful job of developing this website from its initial concept map to the eye pleasing product you will see when you enter the site. Many hours were spent developing and tweaking the website until we were able to launch. I’m thankful for the time spent and collaborative efforts of those men and our athletic coaches to create a website where parents, friends and families can follow the teams and where future athletic recruits can learn more about our athletic programs.” Coach Hughes added, “It’s point and click features are easy for fans of any age to navigate.”

In addition to the new online destination for Red Dragon Athletics, fans currently enjoy added benefits such as photo galleries, coaching biographies and prospective student questionnaire forms. Sports enthusiasts also can be easily linked to school sponsored social networking sites. In the future as the site evolves there are even capabilities for statistics and video clips. While the website is currently a basic overview of Red Dragon Athletics, in the future areas such as the Hall of Fame will be broadened to provide followers with more information.

SIDEARM SPORTS has a client list that includes nearly 500 athletic clients from around the country including Cornell University, Davidson College, Drexel University, Eastern Michigan University, Eastern Illinois University, the University of Hawai'i, University of Nebraska at Omaha, New York University, Syracuse University and many other NCAA DI, DII, DIII, NAIA, NJCAA and collegiate conferences.

This new athletic website is just one of the large steps Wentworth Military Academy and College has taken to improve the athletic facilities and programs on campus. Prior to the 2011-2012 school year Wentworth signed on to a contract with Adidas for apparel and shoes.

Wentworth Military Academy and College is now the smallest “3-Stripes School” in the nation with Adidas.

“We have now completed our fall sports seasons and are halfway through our winter sports seasons and are very impressed by the design and quality of the Adidas products we have ordered so far,” commented Coach Hughes, “the Adidas contract is a great way to provide our coaches and athletes with high quality athletic gear for practices and competitions.”

Over Thanksgiving break hallways and common areas were painted in the Wikoff Athletic Center. During Christmas break the Wikoff Athletic Center Fieldhouse received a face-lift when Wentworth’s National Management (Maintenance) department painted walls, repaired doors and cleaned the interior of the space. Repairs were recently made to the Wikoff Athletic Center pool; it was drained and cleaned as well. The Stephen A. Oliver Parade Field is similarly currently receiving some attention after many football and soccer games were held there this school year to repair it and prepare it for more action in the future. These efforts combined plus the improvements made over the summer to the athletic facilities show the pride that the administration is taking in the coaches, students, staff, athletic teams and facilities at Wentworth Military Academy and College.

NBA Champion: Med Park once called Hannibal home...

To his friends, he was Med Park, a former athlete.
In public, he was just another face amongst the people.
But what some may not know is Med Park spent a lot of time in the basketball limelight playing for the NBA’s St. Louis Hawks.
“He played his whole career in Missouri and he always said that that’s probably the best thing he ever did, was being blessed enough to have his whole career from high school to college to professional career in Missouri,” Randy Park, Med’s son, said. “He was able to benefit or take advantage of — whatever you want to say — in his business career and in his connections and everything he had because people got to watch him his whole life.”
Med grew up in Lexington, Mo., an athletic stand-out at Wentworth Military Academy. When it came to local sports, Med was the local hero.
“He still has records over there for baseball, football, basketball,” Randy said. “He was competitive, he just didn’t talk about himself very much.”
Standing tall at 6-feet-2-inches with a thin, yet thick physique, Med had several offers in athletics as he got older. He could have played baseball for the Pittsburgh Pirates, but basketball ended up being the better fit. So to the University of Missouri he went.
After averaging 4.2 points and 8.6 points per game his freshman and sophomore years with the Tigers, he quickly improved to average 9.5 points per game his junior year and 15.4 points per game his senior year. He was named all-Big Seven his final year and MU was 53-34 over the four years he played.

Wentworth Grad is a Ranger Now...

2LT Jaron C. Jones, a 2010 graduate of Wentworth Military Junior College's ROTC Program, received his Ranger Tab at Fort Benning, Georgia on December 9th upon completion of the U.S. Army's Ranger School. 2LT Jones earned his commission in May 2010 after commanding the Wentworth ROTC Battalion and earning the U.S. Army Cadet Command George C. Marshall Award as the most outstanding Cadet in the program. He went on to finish his education at the University of Central Missouri, where he graduated with a degree in criminal justice in May 2011 and finished as one of the top five per cent of newly commissioned lieutenants in the nation. The U.S. Army's Ranger School is viewed as the premier small unit leadership training program in the Army and the successful completion of this school is an honor for any Soldier. Jaron will attend parachute training in January in preparation for his first assignment in the 101st Infantry Division (Air Assault) at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

In a very nice graduation ceremony just prior to Christmas furlough (break), 8 students participated in fall graduation at Wentworth Military Academy & College.

The 2011 Fall Graduates that were honored in the ceremony were as follows:

Rebecca Michelle Anderson, of Lexington; Terry Lee Etherton, of Henrietta; Steven Levi Fleming, of Bristow, Virg.; Kathryn Lee Genn, of Hermitage; LindyAnne Johnson, of Richmond; Chandler Kamualii Sharp, of Richmond; June Ann Thaller, of Higginsville; and April Nacole Wollam, of Winston.

Of the 8 graduates at Wentworth Military Academy and College this fall, 6 were non-boarding commuter students, 1 was a cadet, and 1 was commissioned.

LTC Joe Aull, Vice President of Academic Affairs at Wentworth Military Academy & College gave the commencement address in which he surprised the audience by "reading their minds."

The students and cadets have now departed the campus for Christmas Furlough (Break) and will return in January.

2011 Wentworth Christmas Show a Big Success...

Captain Love (Band Director) and Captain Robbins (Choir Director) did a wonderful job having their cadets ready to perform a wonderful Christmas Show this year. Staff, Faculty, Cadets, Students, Lexington Community members and family all were treated to a terrific and entertaining show on Wednesday night at Wentworth Military Academy & College.

The semester was complete today after the mid-year graduation in which 8 students completed their Associate Degrees at Wentworth Military Academy & College.

Now, many of the cadets will head home or to a friend's home to enjoy the Christmas Furlough (Break) with their family and friends.

Congratulations to Captain Love, Captain Robbins and all Wentworth Band & Choir members for an outstanding performance for the Christmas show.

Milo Deuel, Class of '43 Receives College Diploma...

On December 7, 2011, the 70th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, friends and family members gathered in the east lounge of the Eastern Star Masonic Home, Boone, Iowa to take part in a very special ceremony.

68 years after graduating in 1943, Milo W. Deuel, of Boone, Iowa, finally received his Junior College diploma from Wentworth Military Academy and College, located in Lexington, Missouri.

Mr. Deuel was called into military action to serve in the South Pacific just weeks prior to walking the stage to receive his diploma from Wentworth.

With his wife, Sarah, two of his children and many other family members and friends with him, Mr. Deuel was honored in a ceremony and presented his college diploma by Colonel William W. Sellers, President of Wentworth Military Academy & College.

The 90-year-old war veteran recently contacted Wentworth Military Academy and College in Lexington, Missouri, and asked whether he could get the diploma he had earned before “shipping out.”

Colonel Sellers readily agreed.

The ceremony included a reading from a citation from Iowa Governor Terry E. Branstad, whose son attended Wentworth in the 1990's. The citation was read by LTC Al McCormick, Wentworth Alumni Relations Director.

“Your diploma was delayed because you sacrificed your own education to serve and protect the United States during World War Two,” stated the citation from Governor Branstad. “We will never be able to fully express our gratitude for your service to our country.”

The ceremony continued with Col. Sellers speaking to Mr. Deuel and his guests prior to the presentation of the diploma.

“You have given us an example to follow Mr. Deuel,” said Col. Sellers.

While presenting the diploma, Col. Sellers said, “At the Wentworth Military Academy and College graduate ceremony this spring, I will tell the young men and women that they too, are called to lead lives of honor and sacrifice as you have done.”

Two of Mr. Deuel’s children traveled from afar to be at the ceremony. Bruce Deuel, of Montana and Margi Deuel Hedron of the Minneapolis, Minn. area were both in attendance.

Speaking briefly to the audience, Mrs. Deuel Hedron said, “My Dad loved the camaraderie, the discipline, and the honor of Wentworth.” She went on to say that her father “was a wonderful example for us (his children) to follow.”

Thanks to today’s technology, Mr. Deuel’s diploma even had the signatures from all the appropriate diploma signees from 1943, including Col. Sellers' grandfather, Col. James M. Sellers, who was President at Wentworth from 1933 to 1960 and continued serving the school til his death at age 95 in 1990.

Mr. Deuel was a Prisoner of War during World War II, and earned several awards during his military service, including a sharpshooter’s badge, a combat infantry badge, the Bronze Star and a presidential citation medal.

“Missing a graduation ceremony was the least of Mr. Deuel’s sacrifice in the service of his country,” said Col. Sellers. “However, giving him the diploma he earned so many years ago is one small way that we can show our thanks to him and those of his generation who fought for our freedom.”

Wentworth Military Academy and College is a private co-educational military high school and two-year college. For 9th-12th graders, Wentworth provides an exemplary college-prep education, which builds self-discipline and self-confidence. In college, small class sizes and personal interaction with faculty allows our traditional and military students to achieve success in academics and in life. Wentworth is one of only five schools in the country to offer a commission as a second lieutenant in the United States Army after just two years of college.

It has been a few weeks since I sent you a note and I wanted to take this time and share some thoughts from the Superintendents office. The 132^nd Corps of Cadets at Wentworth Military Academy & College has truly stepped up and been extremely busy in the past few weeks. Since I posted my last blog notes we have had a couple of grading periods and each cadet is beginning to set their academic progress as we move through the semester. I know many of you are very pleased with the progress you had seen and some of you are waiting to see the progress become more positive. I know each of the cadets is working at trying to do better and to develop better study habits and skills. Remember this is a journey not a race…and that learning will continue throughout their lives. We are trying to instill within them the study habits and skills to help them find academic success. I know that LTC Aull and MAJ Hayes, and the high school faculty are working very hard in the high school to challenge our cadets to be better today than yesterday, because if they are then success is tomorrow. We have a very dedicated faculty that spends many hours working with the cadets to help them succeed with their academic goals.

In the college COL Casey and the college faculty are also working with the cadets to continue to develop their study habits and skills that will help them achieve their potential. These first two years of college set the tone for the academic success of the cadet as they graduate and move forward in their career. They are beginning their finals for the first semester and that will be a gauge for them to see how well they have done during the past 16 weeks. It doesn’t seem possible that we have almost completed 16 weeks of this school year.

We have some very exciting news in the college program. Recently in attending the annual Falcon Foundation Banquet we were very proud to be provided with the following information: Wentworth is one of 5 preparatory schools working with the Falcon Foundation, to prepare young men and women for entry to the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA). On November 4, 2011, the Falcon Foundation held its annual banquet in Colorado Springs for all Falcon Scholars currently attending the USAFA. The Secretary of the Air Force, the Honorable Michael Donley, along with all 4 star Air Force general officers was in attendance. Wentworth has 22 Falcon Scholars at the academy. One of Wentworth’s Falcons, Cadet William Johnson – now in the senior class - was recognized at the banquet for achieving the position of Cadet Squadron Commander. He was given the honor of sitting at the table with Secretary Donley. Many of Wentworth’s Falcons expressed their appreciation for the mentoring and the academic and military training they received at Wentworth. What a wonderful opportunity for our Falcon Cadets that come through the Wentworth program. COL Casey, Dean and the faculty who works with these cadets has truly provided the tools for success to these cadets…Great Job to COL Casey and the college faculty!

Then this past week the President of the University of Central Missouri (UCMO), Charles M. Ambrose, Ed.D, and Colonel William Sellers, President of Wentworth Military Academy and College met to confirm a joint agreement recognizing the collaboration between UCMO’s Bachelor Degree program in Crisis and Disaster Management (CDM) and Wentworth’s new AA Degree in Homeland Security. The new AA degree will transfer to UCMO and fulfill over half the credit hour requirements for the CDM bachelor degree. COL Sellers has truly taken his visionary plans and put them into action. This program will provide yet another opportunity for our cadets to pursue this degree and have a career that will make a difference in the lives of many. We are so thankful to COL Sellers and the college administration for their pursuing this opportunity.

Our winter sports programs are in full swing and as each of the teams participate they find that good practices and learning how to play as a team is very important. Each of our teams have a few games or matches under their belts now and LTC Hughes our Athletic Director tells me that they are each progressing as their season proceeds.

Your sons and daughters will be returning home next week after finishing their first semester (for college and the high school cadets will complete their first semester when they return in January) and will want a little down time. I hope you all get a chance to catch up and share some stories about what they have been doing at the Academy and also what has been happening in the town in which you live and with your family.
Please make sure they know you are proud of them, and encourage them to finish the 2^nd semester strong. Sometimes we as parents forget how important it is to tell our kids how proud we are of them!

Let me share with you just a few highlights of the past few weeks. Besides going to class, playing sports, participating in JROTC or SROTC, studying, marching, and sometimes sleeping, the cadets within the Corps and sometimes the whole Corps have participated in these things:

v Some cadets in the Human Development class have been working with the early childhood class here in Lexington. They are making a difference in the lives of these little children. Some of them told me that they miss their little brothers or sisters and this is fun to help the little ones…what an opportunity for them.

v Veteran’s Day…our cadets were very busy remembering those who have served our country faithfully, and paying tribute for those who have fallen in the line of duty to protect our Freedom. We had a ceremony here on campus and then some of the Corps went to Sedalia MO and marched in their Veterans Day parade. The band also went to Blue Springs to pay tribute to our Veterans. The 132^nd Corps of Cadets truly made us all VERY Proud of them for their tribute to our Veterans.

v We had some cadets go to the Nelson Art Gallery in Kansas City MO and spend the day with the arts and culture that comes from visiting a world class art gallery. They were truly impressed with the quality of the art projects they were able to view.

v We also had some cadets, faculty and staff come together to unite their efforts to have a bake sale and to go to Kansas City and walk/run together in the “Stride Against Breast Cancer Walk.” Both cadets and staff spent much time and effort to raise funds to help in finding a cure. Many of them found their motivation in marching in honor of or in memory of someone they know that cancer has become a reality in their lives. Again how proud we are to see our cadets and staff joins together for such a great cause.

v The JROTC staff and cadets participated in a Cadet Challenge with Van Horn High School and our cadets did a great job in competing and also in hosting another school to their campus. The SAI from the visiting school called me and told me how impressed he was with the cadets from Wentworth who participated in this event. It was a great effort by the JROTC staff.

v Our cadets in the SROTC program recently traveled to Ft Leavenworth for an FTX (field training exercise). They spent 2 ½ days in the field training and preparing themselves for future leadership opportunities. Through the years I have watched this group go out and have an FTX, the cadets realize how important the training is they receive from the senior department staff. LTC Fitz Gerald and his entire staff work very hard to prepare these young men and women to meet the challenges of this training so down the road they will be able to make those decisions that will impact the lives of their soldiers. For these cadets as they mature and become officers their decisions will be real life decisions.

v The Corps participated in the annual Festival of Lights in Lexington. This is the event that kicks off the Christmas season downtown. I had several compliments from the community about how sharp the cadets looked.

v The cadets of Tango Company are raising money to support a local family in need for Christmas. They will provide some much needed items for this family for Christmas. What a humbling experience to come together and help those who are in need. I was told by one of the cadets involved with this program, Sir; this is what Wentworth Cadets do… they help others! How Proud we are of them!

So as I try to sum up my note to you I will simply say WOW, this Corps of Cadets are attending school to get an education, and do all of these other things too! Many of these highlights above were initiated by the cadets. We are extremely proud of each of them!

Let me close by saying how much we appreciate having the opportunity to work with your son or daughter and to see them grow each day…they are very precious individuals.

Wentworth in National News Over Past 2 Weeks...

When Milo Deuel, of Iowa, called over the summer to request that we mail him his junior college diploma...he thought that we could simply mail it to him.

But, after 68 years and fighting for our freedom, Colonel Sellers truly felt that his diploma should be presented to him in a formal ceremony.

That ceremony will be held on a very special day...December 7, 2011; the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

A press release was sent out about the event and the story is now making national news. The story has been printed in newspapers across the country to include, the Kanas City Star, St. Louis Today, Omaha Daily Herald, the Chicago Tribune, the Washington Post, and the Arizona Daily Star...to name a few. The story has also been picked up by radio and television stations across the nation as well.

WWII VETERAN RECEIVES COLLEGE DIPOMAMr. Milo Deuel Receives Junior College Diploma 68 Years After Graduating

On December 7, 2011, Milo W. Deuel, of Boone, Iowa, will finally receive his Junior College diploma from Wentworth Military Academy and College.
Mr. Deuel would have received his diploma 68 years ago had military service not called him to the South Pacific.
Wentworth, located in Lexington, Missouri, recently learned that the 90 year-old World War II veteran had earned his Associate of Arts degree from the school, but had not been presented his diploma as he had been called up to active duty before graduation ceremonies in 1943.
Colonel William W. Sellers, President of Wentworth Military Academy and College, will award Mr. Deuel with his diploma in a ceremony on December 7, 2011, the 70th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, at 1:30 p. m. at the East Lounge of the Eastern Star Mason Home located at 715 West 3rd Street, Boone, Iowa.
Mr. Deuel earned several awards during his military service, including a sharpshooter’s badge, a combat infantry badge, the Bronze Star and a presidential citation medal.
“Missing a graduation ceremony was the least of Mr. Deuel’s sacrifices in the service of his country,” said Col. Sellers. “However, presenting him the diploma he earned so many years ago is one small way that we can show our thanks to him and those of the greatest generation who fought for our freedom.”
Wentworth Military Academy and College is a private co-educational military high school and two-year college. For 9th-12th graders, Wentworth provides an exemplary college-prep education, which builds self-discipline and self-confidence. Cadets Design Games...

CPT Lee Crews’ Human Growth and Development class at Wentworth Military Academy & College, had a project in which they had to design games that were educational, fun, and appropriate for the cognitive and physical development of the preschool aged child. On November 16^th, CPT Crews accompanied her class to the Discovery Room Preschool here in Lexington. This trip was to determine the success of the games they created. The class first observed the children at play. They then introduced their games to the children. They created variations of classics such as tic-tac-toe, twister, and bingo. They also made hand turkeys. The preschoolers and the CPT Crews’ class had a great time.

College students involved were Cadet Andrea Willis, Cadet Madison Muncy, Hannah Ratliff, Tammy Battagler, Rebecca Fitzwater, Crystal Aragon, and Daniel King.

Cadets Very Busy over Veteran's Day 2011 Weekend....

Veteran's Day Weekend 2011 kept the 132nd Corps of Cadets very busy last weekend. From Friday through Monday evening, something was happening somewhere that involved Wentworth Military Academy and College Cadets!

It all began on Wednesday as the Corps gathered in the Chapel to pay honor to Veterans and remember the day and the importance of the very special day.

Soon after the Wentworth Veteran's Day Ceremony was over and a meal was eaten....many of the cadets took a seat in one of our buses and headed to Sedalia, Missouri...1SG Willis's childhood home. There, the cadets marched and the band played in the Sedalia Veteran's Day parade. It was a great experience for the cadets and they were able to meet a lot of people.

Sunday, the cadets marched in the Veteran's Day Sunday Parade.

Monday night, the band traveled to Blue Springs, MO and performed in the parking lot of the Golden Corral Restaurant where a dinner was being held for all Veteran's.

Art Gallery Field Trip...

Wentworth Military Academy art class had a great trip to the art galleries of Kansas City. Our first stop was to see the painting studios at the Kansas City Art Institute. We then walked across the street to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. While there the students drew from a special exhibition of Rodin sculptures. They also had the opportunity to explore the Museum and see its permanent collect.

After the Nelson Museum we went out to eat at Manny’s Mexican Restaurant. Once the meal was over we went into the Crossroads gallery district for the First Friday’s art openings. We saw many small galleries, lots of art, a dance performance in one of the galleries and a Cello performance at the Leedy-Voulkos gallery.

Before returning back to the Academy we visited the gallery called The Late Show which is one of my favorite KC galleries.

I was very impressed with the cadets I took and would have no reservations taking them on another trip.

Wentworth Makes Strides Against Breast Cancer...

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is more than just the name of a walk; it describes the progress we're making together to end breast cancer. However, nothing can describe the hope inspired by walking with hundreds or thousands of others who share a passion for ending this disease. Because nearly everyone has been touched by breast cancer in some way, Wentworth Military Academy & College decided to make a difference by walking and raising money as a team in our local American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event.
How far will you go to end breast cancer? Saving lives from breast cancer starts one team, one walker, and one dollar at a time. Join us, and together we will create a world with less breast cancer and more birthdays.

A group of Staff, Faculty and Cadets took time last Saturday to "Make Strides" and here are the RESULTS:

Seven of the cadets finished in the top 10 finishers in this non-competitive 5K walk/run. Over 10,000 men, women, and children participated in the event on Saturday, October 29, 2011 at the Liberty Memorial in Kansas City, MO.
The Wentworth Color Guard presented the flags at the opening ceremony.
All Wentworth Walkers finished the full 5K -- including Debbie Hatfield, the cousin of WMA employee Cindy Howard's, who is currently battling Stage 4 cancer. She was having a great day and completed the entire 5K. Wentworth Walkers team walked in Debbie's honor.

Cadet Challenge...

On Saturday 29 October 2011, 18 Cadets from Van Horn High School Army JROTC visited WMA to compete in a Presidential Physical Fitness competition and experience various other military skills.

The Wentworth Military Academy Competitors were:

Cadets Jimenez, Peterson, Ortiz, Cline, Schoener, Ukoeninn.

Wentworth was victorious over Van Horne with a combined score of 309 to their 284.

1st Place honors go to Cadet Ukoeninn with the TOP score of 77.

2nd place honors go to Cadet Cline with a score of 69

3rd Place was a tie between Cadet Bridgette Wilkins and Cadet Ortiz with scores of 66 each.

Be sure to congratulate these fine young cadets when you see them around campus today. They represented Wentworth Military Academy and College very well! We are proud of them.

Fall 2011 Field Training Exercise...

Over the weekend of Oct. 21-23, ROTC cadets from Wentworth Military Academy & College participated in Field Training Exercises (FTX) at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. FTX is a training event which trains cadets for the combat environment and prepares them for their final training phase before commissioning, LDAC, the Leader’s Development and Assessment Course.

The weekend began with a Land Navigation practical test in which the cadets were given a compass, protractor, and map and sent out over the training course to find points. For some cadets this was their first Land Navigation experience. The test lasted for 5 hours during the day, during which they must find 5 of 8 points, and 3 hours at night, during which they must find 3 of 5. That night ROTC learned how to set up a Patrol Base and performed Patrol Base Operations.

The following day included Squad Tactical Exercises (STX), which required the squads to work together and perform battle drills while being evaluated in leadership positions. Military Science Level IVs (ROTC cadets preparing to commission this year) played the opposing force (OPFOR). The evening included classes in Forward Operating Base (FOB) Operations and then the actual conducting of FOB Operations.

The weekend concluded with a second Land Navigation test and Recovery Operations on campus, followed by a well-earned pizza dinner. Though they returned exhausted, the FTX taught crucial soldier and leadership skills and provided the cadets an opportunity to learn what it is like to be in the field environment and lead.

Busy 2 Weeks for SROTC...

The SROTC Department is in the midst of a very busy two weeks! It all began with a high ranking official visiting the campus last week. Wentworth SROTC then competed in a "Ranger Challenge" over the past weekend and are now preparing to travel to Leavenworth, Kansas this coming weekend for the Fall 2011 FTX. The FTX is a weekend full of training exercises that the cadets have been training for all semester long.

The Sounds of the Heart organization donated a defibrillator to Wentworth Military Academy for use in their athletic center. The Sounds of the Heart organization has diligently worked to fund the donations to provide this equipment, to several organizations within the community.

COL Michael Lierman, Superintendent of Wentworth said "Wentworth is very thankful to the Sounds of the Heart organization for their generosity in providing this equipment for our facility. We very much appreciate all that the community does to support our Academy."

Greetings Parents, and Families of Cadets;

I hope that each of you that came to the campus this weekend were able to see your son or daughter in action within their company and individually being apart of the things they do each day. I hope each of you were able to visit with the faculty members that each day teacher your son or daughter in class. We have now completed the first four weeks of school and it has been a very busy and exciting time for all. The 132nd Corps of Cadets has begun to work together and become a unit operating together and showing how they can shine. I was delighted to hear from many of you this weekend that you were seeing some very positive changes and actions from your son or daughter. It has been a very short period of time but as I said Saturday after lunch in a few remarks that everyone progresses at a different pace...but they all progress.
Just a few weeks ago we were all getting to know each other and starting a new chapter in our lives and now we have begun to form the pages of the book.

The first 4 week grade period is now in the books, some have done extremely well others are struggling to get their study habits aligned so they can progress as they want to and you want them to. If your son or daughter is not where you hoped they would be, please keep in mind it has just been 4 short weeks. If you have true concerns please make sure you continue to communicate with your son or daughters instructors and you can always contact LTC Joe Aull, Vice President for Academics, and he will follow closely their progress. COL Tim Casey will also be able to help if you are concerned about college cadet grades!

It was great to see you all and to see how proud you were of your son or daughter, and how glad they were to see you. I enjoyed watching them teach you to march and the excitement of them wanting you to do well.
The cadets are beginning to show their ability to lead or to follow wherever they stand in the Corps at this time. We have been busy trying to keep up with all of the athletic teams that compete each week and they all have fought till the end of the game, no one gave up. All of the teams are working hard to make you proud no matter what the outcome of the game is.

If you were not able to come to campus for the events this weekend please go to the website this week, I know MAJ Farley, our Public Relations Director had many cameras flashing this weekend and there will be many pictures for you to see. Give him a few days to organize them and then you will see the weekend through his cameras. Also feel free to contact LTC Aull or COL Casey about any academic issues. You can also contact 1SG Gary Willis, Commandant of Cadets in reference to all Cadet Life issues. We are sorry you were not able to make it to campus.

The Cadets have been very busy not only with the activities on the campus but with some community service projects that they have done within the Lexington community. As I said Saturday, I am very proud of the cadets this year and they are all working together to find success.

I would encourage you to continue to communicate with your son or daughter and encourage them to continue to raise the bar personally for their success. They each want you to be proud of them!!
The Academy faculty and staff are all working to make sure that this school year we become good communicators...communication is one of the keys to success. Please feel free to email or call me and let me know how you feel we are doing...this is important to all of us.

I hope each of you who were on the campus this weekend felt welcome and enjoyed your time at our fall parent weekend. There is a saying that I often share that says: "people don't care how much you know, until they first know how much you care" I look around and I see a lot of people who care a great deal and are willing to go the extra mile to help the cadets/students be successful. I have observed a very positive tone around the campus this year and feel the excitement that comes from that environment!

Learning Through Experiencing...

CPT Gregg Martin and his World History class reenacted ancient Greek war maneuvers to better understand how ancient Greeks have influenced the U.S. Military today. The students made a phalanx outside of the Scholastic building so that they could experience the day to day life of a Spartan soldier. Students made the connections of the phalanx and tortuga to modern day tanks and A.P.C.'s.

Congressman Skelton Speaks to Pacific Island Cadets...

Congressman Ike Skelton made a special visit to Wentworth Military Academy & College today to speak to the cadets from the various Pacific Islands. Mr. Skelton a native of Lexington, MO took the time to thank the cadets for challenging themselves to be successful.

Mr. Skelton told the cadets of his experiences as a Wentworth cadet and how special his time was here. He told stories of his progression from "the bottom" in high school to "the top" when he gradutated junior college at Wentworth as the number one student in the class.

It was a special moment for these fine cadets and a moment they may never forget.

Civil War Authors Forum a Huge Success at Wentworth...

On Wednesday night over 130 people gathered in the Hall of Honor at Groendyke Hall to listen to a forum of four authors who have written books on a variety of subjects in the American Civil War.

The event was one of two events held on the campus of Wentworth Military Academy & College which were held as the "kick-off" of a ful weekend of events to celebrate the 150th anniverary of the Battle of Lexington in the Civil War.

The event was moderated by

Dr. Gary Kremer is Executive Director of the State Historical Society of Missouri. He previously taught history at Lincoln University in Jefferson City and William Woods University in Fulton. Kremer has also served as Missouri's state archivist. He has written, co-written and co-edited ten books, including Women in Missouri History: In Search of Power and Influence; Dictionary of Missouri Biography; A History of Missouri, 1875-1919; and Missouri's Black Heritage. Kremer is also an authority on the African-American experience in Missouri. He earned his PhD in history from American University.

Authors who participated in the forum were as follows:

Dr. Diane Mutti Burke analyzes Missouri's small slaveholding households, which predominated in the state. Focusing on counties along the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, she argues that small-scale slavery uniquely affected the owners’ economic strategies, relationships between owners and slaves, and the communities of both slaves and slaveholders. A native of Kansas City, Mutti Burke is an associate professor of history at the University of Missouri at Kansas City. She earned her BA from Dartmouth College and her PhD from Emory University. Dr. Jeremy Neely examines the exploits of John Brown, William Quantrill, and other notorious guerrillas as well as the lives of everyday people who lived through the conflict on the Kansas-Missouri border. Neely will offer an analysis of the Border War’s origins and consequences and share particulars of events in the Lafayette County area during the Civil War. Neely received his PhD from the University of Missouri. He lives on a farm 15 miles from the

Kansas-Missouri line in rural Vernon County, Missouri.

Dr. Mark Geiger reveals a previously-unknown conspiracy among senior politicians and bankers to divert funds from Missouri banks to arm the rebel forces. The plot failed, and ultimately cost thousands of people their property and many their lives. This book won the 2011 Tom Watson Brown Book Prize for the best book on Civil War history from the Society of Civil War Historians. Geiger is a 2011-12 Kluge Fellow at the Library of Congress. He earned his BA from Carleton College, an MBA from the Wharton School, and his PhD from the University of Missouri.

Dr. William Parrish is considered by many to be the “Dean of Missouri Civil War History” and brings to the panel a tremendous depth and breadth of knowledge on the Civil War in Missouri. Parrish is well-known for his anthology of Civil War essays from the Missouri Historical Review and also served as General Editor of a six-volume history of Missouri, published by the University of Missouri Press. Parrish is a Professor Emeritus in the History Department at Mississippi State University.

The events were a huge success and a great way to begin the upcoming weekend of events.

Civil War Monument Re-Dedicated on Wentworth Campus...

Cadets, Faculty, Staff and 131 citizens of the Lexington community gathered at Wentworth Military Academy & College Campus Wednesday night to rededicate a Civil War Monument which stands in front of Groendyke Hall.
The monument marks the very spot where Captain Guibor's Battery shelled the Federal Troops who were entrenched on Masonic College Hill during the Battle of Lexington on September 18-20, 1861.
The monument was erected in 1928 by Lafayette-Lexington Chapter D.A.R. and the citizens of Lexinton.
During the past summer, a walkway was built around the monument.
COL Sellers spoke at the rededication and the Wentworth Military Academy & College band and color guard performed. The rededciation was the kick-off event along with the Civil War Authors Forum for the Battle of Lexington Sesquicentennial celebrating the 150th anniversary of the battle.

Hello Parents and Friends of WMA&C,

I have had the pleasure of helping with the registration of the 132^nd Corps of Cadets and I am proud to say that we have a great group of young men and women on campus for this school year. Please let me introduce myself, my name is Captain Lindsey Mesner and I am Wentworth’s Parent Liaison for the 2011-2012 school years. I am originally from North Iowa and graduated with my Bachelor’s Degree from Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa. Most recently I spent the past two years in Ohio while I was studying for my Master’s Degree in Education at Defiance College in Defiance, Ohio; I was also employed on The DC campus as the Assistant Volleyball Coach. While I’m not a stranger to Education, it has always been my dream job to work and coach athletics on a small campus and to help provide students the resources needed to reach their full potential academically. My transition to Lexington was made much easier by the friendly staff and faculty, and my first experience with Wentworth’s Camp LEAD this past summer was with smiling, ambitious, attentive students. I am very happy to be a part of the Wentworth tradition and enjoy my daily routine with students whether it is in the role of Activities Director or as College Volleyball Coach.

It is my goal as Parent Liaison to ensure that information flows steadily and effectively between the school system itself and the parents of the students who attend Wentworth. I would like to encourage parents who have a need but are unsure of the next step to call or email me and I will be more than willing to help point you in the right direction. Also, I would like to help parents understand how they can become more involved on campus by providing you with information on policies and procedures or events and happening on campus; not only for activities and athletic events, but also for academic endeavors. My main purpose is to ensure that parents and guardians have access to every bit of information necessary to enhance their student’s success in school.

Wentworth Executes "Sounding of the Cannon"...

The “Sounding of the Cannon” was held on Monday, August 22^nd at Wentworth Military Academy and College. The traditional ceremony was held in the Memorial Chapel and began at 9 a. m.

The “Sounding of the Cannon” is a ceremony which was started at Wentworth 17 years ago by former Wentworth President, Colonel Jerry Brown who served in that capacity from 1993 until 2000. Brown is now serving as the Mayor of Lexington and is schedule to give the keynote address at the ceremony.

The ceremonial sounding of the cannon signifies the opening of the school year.

During the ceremony, the 132^nd Corps of Cadets were sworn in by reciting the Cadet Oath. In addition, the Wentworth Battalion Commander, Cadet Blackmon, was introduced.

Traditionally, the actual sounding of the cannon occurs toward the end of the ceremony. Excerpts from General Douglas MacArthur’s last speech which he gave to the Corps at West Point, “Duty, Honor, Country,” is read aloud. A total of three rounds are fired by the cannon during the ceremony.

Lexington community members and former Old Boys attended the Wentworth Military Academy & College faculty, staff, and Board of Trustees members to celebrate this special day which kicked off the 132^nd year of the school’s existence in Lexington.

Wentworth is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

132nd Corps of Cadets: "This is OUR House!"...

On Monday, August 15, 2011, the Corps Command was introduced for the 132nd Corps of Cadets officially beginning the opening of the 132nd year of Wentworth.

Cadet Michael Blackmon of Rockwall, TX was selected as the Battalion Commander. First Sergeant Gary Willis, Commandant of Wentworth feels that Cadet Blackmon is very deserving. "Cadet Blackmon is a well rounded Cadet with a resume to support it, a good example of 'Be. Know. Do.' Battalion Commander Blackmon recently completed Airborne School.

Wentworth Campus Upgrades In Progress...

Only weeks before the athletes begin checking in (August 8th) and construction workers are putting a lot of blood and sweat into making various upgrades on campus here in Lexington, MO.

The last of all the buildings to be re-roofed this summer, is being completed as we speak on the Administration building.

The civil war monument has a new walkway around it as does the campus flag pole.

The soccer field has had a large portion of it resodded and currently ditches are being dug to provide wiring alleys for the lights and scoreboard which will be going up this summer. The field house has been being worked on all summer and there are new locker rooms going up. The gym floor is being refinished in the next week and the weight room will have a different look as well. Scoreboards, volley ball stantions, and soccer goals are all ready to be put up yet this summer.

East Barracks has been receiving a facelift this summer to include a new roof and a lot of concrete work surrounding it.

The work will continue even after the athletes arrive on August 8th until it is all complete and the sounding of the cannon happens on Aug. 22nd.

Since they they were children, Branden and Aaron Gunn have been taught to share everything – so much so that Branden said the two didn’t learn the word “mine” until they started school.
That mentality has stuck with them throughout life. Now, with their matching glasses on their matching faces, the twin Cadets from Charlie Company share a determination and drive to serve.
“It’s one thing to be brothers, it’s another thing to be twins,” Aaron said. “Above all, when no one else is there for you, your brother is and it’s nice that we can go through everything together. I don’t think there is a tighter bond.”
As part of the scholarship they received to attend Wentworth Military Academy and College in Missouri, the 18-year-old Gunns were required to enlist in the National Guard and complete the Leader’s Training Course.
Having just graduated high school May 22, a traditional college – with its textbooks and parties – did not suit the men. By going to Wentworth, they will commission after just two years at the junior college, but must obtain a bachelor’s degree from a four-year university.
While at Wentworth, they are given the opportunity to train a few days a week and shadow National Guard Soldiers.
“This was a school that can give me what I want to do after two years,” Branden said. “I’m already in the service while I’m there, and I could keep the discipline and the camaraderie that you get in the service the whole time I was there. I love the discipline and the routine it gives.”
Once arriving at LTC, the brothers who were used to spending every day together were immediately separated into different platoons.
They’ve only seen each other only a few times since – once during fireguard duty and once in formation while their platoons stood next to each other, for example.
These quick glances and snippets of conversation have kept them going.
“Every time I see him I think, ‘OK, I just saw him pass by me, so he’s still here and he’s not giving up, so I’m not giving up either,’ ” Branden said.
Due to their lack of interaction at the course, many of their cadre hadn’t noticed they are twins. To test their squad leaders, drill sergeants had the boys switch places one day during a formation.
“They were shocked because most of them didn’t know I was a twin,” Aaron said of his squad leader having to choose between him and his brother. “His jaw just dropped.”
Aaron said he finds these instances, along with the constant questions about being a twin, amusing. The most annoying thing for him is being asked whether their girlfriends get them confused. Simply put – no, they don’t.
Both agree that while their separation hasn’t been the easiest, it is necessary to help build their leadership skills – an area where both thrive.
“When I go through some training exercises, especially teamwork drills, I think to myself it would be awesome if my brother was here because we would have this done in a heartbeat,” Brandon said.
For Aaron, staying busy helps him, because when he sees Branden, he misses him.
“It’s good to know that he’s here and he hasn’t quit, and we’re still in it together,” Aaron said. “On graduation day, we’ll walk up there together, we’ll meet, shake hands and then we’ll leave – together.

Greetings Camp Lead Parents:

I hope that each of you are having a good summer and getting a chance to relax for a little while. Our campus is very busy with the activities of the summer. Our Camp Lead cadets are doing a great job this summer. They have only been here a short time and they have learned what it is to be away from home and to make some decisions for themselves. They have learned to listen, follow directions, and work hard. These are some of the keys to success. Many of them are experiencing success in a very short time. Two weeks...yes just two weeks and alot has happened with them and as I see them each day most have smiles on their faces and very smartly say good morning sir when I see them. I have talked with them as a group a few times in the past two weeks and found them to be very attentive and eager to learn. All of us want to be successful in our lives and we just need to have the tools to know how to find that success.

I know many of you are following the daily post on Facebook (Camp Lead page) and it is exciting to see the cadets working hard to accomplish the daily tasks both in the class room and during the activity and training sessions. It gives us the staff and faculty of Wentworth great joy to see the accomplishments of the cadets. I often talk of the ole cliche' that says; "you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink...our job is to make him thirsty". These cadets seem to thirst for the opportunity to gain knowledge and confidence in themselves.

I hope each of you are pleased with the results you are seeing with your son or daughter thus far. Our entire TEAM of faculty and staff are working very hard to ensure your son or daughters experience is memorable. I am very proud of our CAMP LEAD TEAM!! Scoring the first nine points of the game and withstanding one run by the South, the North whipped the South 92-59 in the annual Lions Club District 26-M5 Senior all-star basketball game at the Georgia Robertson Burns Athletic Complex on the Gibler Campus of Missouri Valley College in Marshall Saturday.

Getting four points from Alex Everhart of Crest Ridge, the South, which trailed 15-5, went on an 11-0 run to grab its only lead of the game with 11:42 left in the first half.

The North answered with an 11-0 run, four points, including a three-pointer, coming from Derreon Parker of Grain Valley and four more from Blake Seitz of Wellington.

Another 10-4 run by the North increased the advantage to 36-20 with 3:52 to play in the 20-minute first half.

The North continued its dominance throughout the rest of the first half, leading 43-24 at the break.

Opening the second half with three straight baskets, the North built its lead to 25 points.

The South tried to inch its way back into the game, scoring six of the next eight points, but a three-pointer by the North's Alex Albaugh of Wentworth triggered a 9-0 run for the North.

Again, the South inched its way closer, getting back to within 23 points when Derrick Stone-king of Leeton connected from long range, but the North retaliated with a 9-2 run, spurred by two baskets by Seitz.

The South never got closer than 31 points the rest of the game.

Parker paced the South team with 22 points, including four three-pointers. Seitz, who was voted the team's most-valuable player, finished with nine field goals and 18 points. Robert Brewer of Richmond added 13 points and Albaugh two threes and 10 points.

Santa Fe's Corey Fitzwater added eight points and Saint Paul's Brandon Haake two. Concordia's Carter Brown did not play due to another commitment.

Everhart led the South with 10 points. Zak Tylar of Green Ridge and Stoneking each scored nine points, with Tanner Sutton of Harrisonville finishing with seven points. Voted the team's MVP was six-point scorer Kortez Woolen of Warrens-burg.

The North hit 32 two-point field goals, seven threes and seven of 13 free throws. The South connected on 18 two-point field goals, five threes and eight of 19 free-throw chances.

In competition earlier on Saturday, Adam Wood of William Chrisman won the three-point shooting competition, Albaugh the free-throw shooting contest, and Woolen the Hot Shot competition.

District 26-M5 consists of 11 counties, bordered on the south by Nevada, on the north by Or-rick, on the east by Slater and on the west by the Kansas state line. District 26-M5 consists of 63 Lions Clubs, 31 of which are south of Highway 50, which serves as the approximate dividing line between the high schools on the south (gold) and the north (purple).

High School Soccer Coach Hired for Coming Fall Season...

Wentworth Military Academy has hired a High School Soccer Coach.

Daniel Coimbra, a native of Brazil will be joining the Wentworth Family on July 8th as the Head High School Soccer Coach and Assistant to the Commandant's Staff.

Coimbra will be a huge addition to the staff. With a lifetime of soccer experience, he is also speaks three different languages: Portuguese, Spanish and English.

Coimbra, a graduate of Waldorf College in Iowa, was originally slated to be MAJ Kevin Farley's (Head Men's Soccer Coach) assistant coach at Iowa Lakes C.C. in the coming fall; once Farley took the college coaching position at Wentworth, he was contacted by Coimbra and talks began at that point to get Coimbra into the Wentworth Family.

Coimbra, is a coach that believes in a philosophy of character and leadership. He uses soccer as a tool to teach the skills of character and leadership.

In addition to soccer, Coimbra will play a major roll in Commandant Willis' plans as an Assistant to the Commandant's Staff and will live on campus to help support as a mentor to the cadets.

Coimbra was recently married and his wife will be joining him in Lexington this fall.

Basketball Signs 2 More Players....

On the day that Coach Hughes signed his first basketball player in this new era for Wentworth college athletics, he also signed his second and third players as well.

First, he signed transfer Jordan Maxwell (Left) to come play for Wentworth Military College. Jordan is a transfer from Brown Mackie College where he averaged 7 points per game, 3 assists and rebounds.

Hughes also signed Mark Kolat as his third signing for the upcoming fall basketball season. Kolat is from Knob Noster, missouri. Kolat is pictured on the right with his family and Coach Hughes.

The Red Dragons Men's Basketball team will be beginning play in the coming fall along with Women's Volleyball and Men's Soccer as the first 3 sports to re-start college participation in sports for Wentoworth Military College.

Wentworth Military Academy and College Men's Basketball Coach/Athletic Director, Tom Hughes has his first commitment to play basketball.

Today, Da'Ron Elliott-Jenkins of Richmond, completed his paperwork which makes him a part of the new basketball team and will participate this coming fall.

Da'Ron was voted Defensive Player of the Year while playing for Richmond High School. The 6'-0" basketball player was also voted the most improved honors.

JCLC Departs after a Successful 2 Weeks...

The US Army Junior Cadet Leadership Camp departed campus just days prior to Camp LEAD start-up.

During the 2-week period, Wentworth Military Academy and College hosted 566 total cadets, 80 retired officers and non-commissioned officers, and 32 chaperones.

Participants of the camp came from Missouri, Iowa and Illinois.

Major Ed Fiora, USA, Wentworth Senior Army instructor did a fabulous job of coordinating the event.

Camp LEAD has begun and we have a very good group of young folks here working hard and having fun to become Leaders.

Day 1 was a lot of getting checked in, haircuts, etc. Day 2 was a day full of fun, team-building activities. Everyone really seemed to enjoy themselves.

State Representative Aull Hired as VP of Academic Affairs & High School Principal...

Colonel William W. Sellers, President of Wentworth Military Academy and College, announced today that Wentworth has named Lexington native and State Representative Joe Aull as Vice President of Academic Affairs and High School Principal.

In making the announcement, Sellers said, “With Joe Aull’s leadership, our academic programs will take a huge step forward. Joe has been an educational leader in the state of Missouri for over forty years as teacher, coach, principal, school superintendent, and legislator. For the last seven years, he has diligently fought for education issues in the Missouri House, and we look forward to supporting him as he serves out his final term in Jefferson City. Joe will start full time at Wentworth for our Camp Lead summer school program, so he will have a good head start as we prepare to open the 2011-12 school year. I am thrilled to have him as a key part of our team.”

Representative Aull has served in the State House, representing Lafayette and Saline Counties, since his initial election in 2004. Term limits bar him from seeking re-election in 2012. He currently serves as the ranking minority party member of the House Elementary and Secondary Education Committee and the House–Senate Joint Education Committee, among others.

Cadet Sparkman Only Undergraduate Cadet to Solve Mathematical Problem...

Cadet Sergeant Major Nathan Sparkman, of Southlake, Texas is the 2011 recipient of the Major Keith Maring Award.

The Major Keith Maring Award is in honor of Major Keith Maring, mathematics instructor at Wentworth for over 30 years. The perpetual award of a medal was established in 1986 to be given to the cadet in college who attains the highest achievement in mathematics.

Cadet Sparkman achieved something amazing this year!

A mathematical problem was posed by mathematicians from Bucarest, Romania to the Mathematical Association of America. The mathematicians ask that the problem be printed and challenged anyone to solve the problem. Cadet Nathan Sparkman was the only undergraduate cadet in the United States to solve the problem. His solution to the problem will be published in the Mathematical Journal in November of 2011. Cadet Sparkman's math instructor at Wentworth was Jerry Masuda. This is a GREAT ACCOMPLISHMENT.

Cadet Sparkman's solution to the problem took over 6 pages of notebook paper, front and back, to solve.

The 22 newly commissioned second lieutenants at Wentworth Military College recently had their lieutenant shoulder boards pinned on by their friends and/or family members. They also each receive their first salute--a military courtesy that has come to be known as the “Silver Dollar Salute”.

The tradition of a newly appointed officer giving a silver dollar to the first enlisted person to salute them has its roots in the British regiments originally stationed in colonial America. The salute itself demonstrates deference to the senior rank of the individual being honored.

Newly commissioned British officers were assigned an enlisted soldier to train them, teach them the regiment’s history and traditions, and ensure that his equipment met appropriate standards. Grateful Lieutenants often expressed their gratitude by informally compensating the enlisted soldier with a small sum of money.

In 1816, American Second Lieutenants received a monthly pay of $25, a $3 ration allowance, and $1 for an enlisted advisor. Lieutenants today are no longer assigned an enlisted advisor, but the responsibility for teaching the newly commissioned officer is embodied today in the unique relationship formed between a second lieutenant and his or her first platoon sergeant. This morning, the awarding of the silver dollar for the first salute symbolizes the new lieutenant’s acknowledgement of the enlisted soldier’s knowledge and expertise from which they desire to learn---for which they will compensate that soldier one silver dollar, representing the historical amount paid to that enlisted advisor almost 200 years ago.

Starke to Head New WMA International Department...

Colonel William W. Sellers, President of Wentworth Military Academy and College, announced today that Wentworth has established an International Department and named Major Cristhina Starke as International Department Director.

In establishing the new department, COL Sellers stated, “Since Major Starke became the Director of International Admissions at Wentworth in December 2008, enrollment of international students has increased by 400 percent in a little over two years. During that time, Cristhina has recruited students from over 18 different countries and five continents, while also serving as counselor and advisor to those students and their families. She has done an outstanding job in all aspects of her service to our international families, and we want to expand her role in supporting Wentworth’s education of students from all over the world.”

The new International Department will have a larger scope and purpose to serve Wentworth’s growing international population. The United States has become a magnet for bright and ambitious foreigners striving for a strong educational experience, and Wentworth Military Academy and College is a unique opportunity for international students to learn life skills and leadership training as an integral part of the experience. This is a major gift and a significant show of confidence and support as the school continues to move forward. In a recent Foundation board meeting, the following motion was made and passed “The WMA Foundation does hereby proudly support the mission of WMA with a donation of $100,000.00 (one hundred thousand dollars) to the general operating fund.”

GIVING: Cadets Donate Check from Carwash to Food Pantry...

On May 7th, many of the Wentworth cadets got together at B&L Bank and held a carwash to raise money. From noon on that Saturday until approximately 3pm, cadets worked hard to wash cars as a constant line of vehicles lined up to be washed.

The fee for the carwash was by donation. The 131st Corps of Cadets chose to donate half of the money raised from the carwash to the Lexington Food Pantry.

Last week, just a few days before graduation, Cadet LTC Michael Waldron, of Lake Wales, Florida handed a check in the amount of $375 to Jan Wright, of the Lexington Food Pantry.

Ms. Wright was very thankful and impressed with the donation. "I would like to thank each and every cadet that helped with the carwash," she said. "It was impressive to see all the young men and women out there working together."

Wentworth Superintendent, Col. Mike Lierman was just as complimentary.... "I would like to thank the cadets, and staff/faculty for their help and support of the car wash. They each gave of their time to help in support of the community effort. I am pleased that the Corps of Cadets were able to present a check to the Lexington Food Pantry to assist those in need in our community. Our cadets always seem to be willing to support the community of Lexington, and we are very proud of them for their help with this project," he said.

Wentworth Inks Exclusive Deal with Adidas...

Wentworth Military Academy and College signed a contract with Adidas yesterday,
May 19th, which makes Wentworth an exclusive Adidas school.

The exclusive deal means so much for Wentworth and should be very exciting for the cadets!

By being an "Adidas school", it means that all athletic clothing worn by the athletes (both high school and college) will be Adidas apparel.

But, it also means even more than athletics!

worn by the cadets.

The Adidas signing also includes all PT gear, "Slickers", and warm-ups for the cadets at Wentworth. All of these items (PT gear, Slickers, and warm-ups) will now be Adidas gear and the quality is a HUGE upgrade.

Billy Baber, former Kansas City Chief and owner of MB2 Sports located in Kanas City, will be the exclusive Adidas representative for Wentworth. He will work directly with new Athletic Director, Tom Hughes, all coaches, and Capt. Chris Fiora, QM Master.

Adidas clothing will also be available in the QM for purchase as well.

This is one of the first of many upgrades that Wentworth is making to improve the overall experience for Wentworth Cadets, both high school and college.

The President's Blog Post...

Things are wrapping up on campus as we enter our final days before Commencement. This morning, the cadets had Commandant's time in the barracks to get ready for departure this weekend. The last two final exam periods are this afternoon, and tomorrow will be taken up by rehearsal for our Commencement activities.

The grounds are being prepared for the weekend, and we are hoping that the predicted rain holds off. All the parents are invited to the President's Home for a reception at 5:00 on Friday evening, and Lori and I hope to see many of you there. We then have the Awards Ceremony and Baccalaureate Services on Friday night, before Commencement Services and the Commissioning Ceremony for our newly minted Second Lieutenants on Saturday morning. United States Senator Roy Blunt will be the Commencement speaker, and Major General Jim McDonald, commanding general at Cadet Command, will be the Commissioning officer. Other distinguished guests will include former U.S. Congressman and Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee Ike Skelton, WMA Class of 1951, State Senator Bill Stouffer and State Representative Joe Aull. Our junior college and high school graduates are eagerly looking forward to participating in the final flag ceremony after receiving their diplomas. That is always an emotional time for our young men and women who are graduating, and a point of pride for parents and those of us who played a role in their education.

It is going to be a busy summer as we prepare for the next school year. We already have 45 cadets signed up for Camp Lead, and anticipate the inquiries picking up as schools across the country let out over the next few weeks. As he has for the last 12 years, COL Rick Cottrell will serve as Camp Lead Director. In addition, our inquiries for the 2011-2012 school year in both the high school and the college are significantly higher this year than last year at this time. We will have 800 high school students on campus the last week of May and first week of June for the JROTC Cadet Leadership Camp (JCLC). Major Ed Fiora has given us tremendous leadership in building that program.

We have received over 50 letters of interest and resume's for the High School Principal position from across the country, with many top notch applicants - we will keep you abreast as we move forward with the interview process. The new roof on East Barracks was just completed today, and within three weeks, work will begin on the roofs of the Scholastic Building, the Chapel, Sandford Sellers Hall, the Mess Hall, and the Administration Building.

All of us - cadets and staff - look forward to the weekend activities, and we hope you will be able to join us!

Cadets Travel to Sedalia for a Night of Arena Football...

Last Saturday night, May 14, 2011 was a night that 32 cadets will probably never forget. For many of them it was their first time to ever see an Arena Football game.

The 32 cadets traveled with Commandant 1SG Willis and Major Farley (Head College Soccer Coach) to Sedalia, MO to enjoy a night away from campus to enjoy the game.

Everyone had a great time watching the game and enjoying the sights and sounds of an athletic event.

The new Commandant is very excited about future activities on and off campus with his Corps of Cadets next year.

WMA Baseball Ends in District Semi-Final Game.

This Wentworth Military Academy Baseball Team ended their season last night after being defeated in the District Semi-Final game by number 1 seeded Wellington.

WMA had a good run on the season and we are very proud of their accomplishments.

Two cadets were named to the All-District Team. Those Cadets were Alex Albaugh and Zac Wiss.

Porte-Cantu Shoots an 80 in Second Round Today...

Congratulations to Cadet Porte-Cantu! Although he did not finish at the top of the leader board at the end of the day...he performed great today finishing up with a score of 80! His score for the day was the 5th best in the State and helped him to finish 25th overall.

Cadet Porte-Cantu represented Wentworth Military Academy, the Lexington Community, his team, his family and himself very honorably over the last few weeks of competition.

After beating Northeast Nodaway 14-3 last night in the district playoffs...the Wentworth Military Academy Baseball Team will now move on to the semi-finals.

The award banquet is the first of many events which will honor cadets for their many achievements throughout the year.

It is very busy around the campus in the last couple of weeks of the school year. The cadets are very diligently studying for finals and completing those last minute projects. It is an exciting time of year as we will see our graduates walk across the stage and receive their diplomas and start the next phase of their lives. For our cadets who will be commissioned they will continue their education process and will officially be 2nd Lts in the U. S. Army. We are very proud of all of our graduates and our commissionees.

We are also excited that we have been able to start some construction work on some of our buildings that we have been planning for several months. Work has begun on East Barracks this week and as the summer progresses we will be doing work on our Scholastic Building, Sellers Hall, and Administration building. It will be a busy summer with JCLC Camp, our SROTC Mini Camp, and CAMP Lead. We are all excited about the coming summer with so much to get accomplished before we open the next school year.

We are very thankful to have the opportunity to work with your sons and daughters and are very proud of them. We hope you all will be able to come to campus next week and witness the ceremonies.

Wentworth Military College's five "Falcons" were recently selected to attend the United States Air Force Academy. They will report to the Academy in Colorado this summer on June 23rd.

It is approaching graduation and you can sure tell! The pizza was out last night along with the desert and all the senior high school and college graduates...we even had a couple cadets who were BOTH high school and college graduates at the same time (impressive)!

It was great to see everyone enjoying themselves and listening to a Wentworth Alum talk about the future of our cadets and even some of the past...like when he was a cadet and there was ONE rotary phone on each barracks floor! Of course, all the cadets looked at each other wondering what a "rotary phone" is???

It was a great evening and the cadets were finished just in time to go study for their tough exams that are approaching.

It was a perfect day and many people took advantage of the event which took place at a local bank parking lot.

Cadet Orona has been selected to be honored at an Academic Banquet hosted by KMZU 100.7 FM radio station. The event is held annually to honor EXCELLENT ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT.

The student selected for the banquet always excels in many different areas and belongs to many school organizations or clubs. They are all impressive because of their discipline and focus.

The cadets in the Senior ROTC spent their weekend at Fort Leavenworth going through their "Spring Super-Lab" training.

The MS4s (Cadet Graff and his staff) actually conduct the planning & coordination of the event. The MS1s, MS2s, and MS3s particpate in the event. The staff cadre, led by LTC Darren Fitz Gerald, were responsible for overseeing the entire weekend.

The focus on the entire exercise includent day & night land navigation training, rifle marksmanship, forward operations, base operations, and squad-level tactical training. The event lasted 2 1/2 days.

Cadet John Ramos was selected as the Superior Performer of the weekend and was awarded the "Red Dragon Batallion Coin" by LTC Fitz Gerald.

WMA Team competed in Raider Meet at Fort Leavenworth, KS

Congratulations to Wentworth Military Academy cadets who participated this past weekend in the Fort Leavenworth Raider Meet! The cadets, coached by Major Ed Fiora, USA, Senior Army Instructor, competing at the meet against 10 other JROTC programs, finished in 2nd place in the Land Navigation category...and finished 3rd overall in the team category.

Teams compete in a variety of events during the 2-day competition where they are judged on physical fitness, poncho raft swimming, cross-country litter carry, land navigation, and rope bridge.

The Wentworth Military Academy Raider Team consists of two teams: WMA Team Red and WMA Team White.

WMA Team Red is captained by Cadet Livingston. The remainder of the team consists of Cadets Ashley, Dawson, Bernardelli, King, Liddy, P. Medina, and Pak.
WMA Team White is captained by Cadet Jimenez. His teammates include Cadets Bruemleve, Huynh, Lopez, Torres, Vo-Le, Wyman, and Xu.

New Commandant Announced...

Wentworth Military Academy and College President COL Bill Sellers announced today that First Sergeant Gary Willis will be the new Commandant at the 131 year-old institution.

"Wentworth is lucky to have First Sergeant Willis as our new Commandant. He brings a wealth of experience working with young people. As Commandant, he will be responsible for the safety, health, welfare and leadership training of our Corps of Cadets. He is an inspiring leader who will have an immediate impact on our cadets."

Commandant Willis is a native of Sedalia, Missouri. He recently retired from the U.S. Army and lives in Sedalia with his wife Pennie and their three children, Sydney, Terrell and Spencer.

There will be a press release going out later today.

Congratulations to Coach Florence and the Wentworth Military Academy (H.S.) baseball team. The team recently placed 3rd in the Mid-State Conference Baseball Tournament. The Red Dragons did this with only two primary pitchers.

Congratulations are also in order for two of the individual ball players! Cadets Zachary Wiss and Troy Blase were both named to the Mid-State Conference All-Tournament baseball team for their talents on the diamand.

Two Qualify for NJCAA National Tournament in Track & Field...

Long time Wentworth coach, Don McEwen has announced that two of his four members of the 2011 Track & Field program have qualified to compete in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA)National Track meet to be held May 5-7, 2011. The athletes will travel to Alforde, NY to compete.

Cadet Dalton Striedel III of Destin, Fla. and Andrew Steverson of Lexington will both compete at the NJCAA Division III level at the NJCAA National Championship Track & Field Championships.

Cadet Dalton Striedel III qualified for nationals in pole vaulting. Striedel actually qualified for nationals after borrowing a pole to use from some other particants who were competing as representatives for Illinois College.

Andrew Steverson of Lexington qualified for nationals in both the long jump and the triple jump events. Steverson is currently ranked 2nd in the nation at the NJCAA Division III level.

This season only 4 athletes are representing Wentworth Military College in track and field. The national qualifiers will really help jump start next year's program as Wentworth has decided to ramp up the level of athletics next year by placing more emphasis on it's current college sports and adding additional sports.

Wentworth Announces New Phi Theta Kappa Members...

Wentworth Military College in Lexington has announced the names of the cadets who have earned membership into the Tau Chapter of the elite educational fraternity of Phi Theta Kappa.

The international honor society, which originated in Missouri, is for two-year colleges and academic programs. The organization is based on, Phi Beta Kappa, which is an international honor society for universities and traditional four-year colleges.

Phi Theta Kappa has over 2 million members in more than 1,250 chapters located around the World. Their mission is to “recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students,” according to the organizations web site.

Phi Theta Kappa furthers their mission to “provide opportunities for individual growth and development through participation in honors, leadership, service and fellowship programming.”

Col. Tim Casey, Dean of Students at Wentworth Military College, announced the designation of 15 current cadets and students who have qualified as members of the Tau Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa.

The College was organized in 1923 as an outgrowth of Wentworth Military Academy, whcih was established in 1880. Wentworth College offers high school graduates the same courses in lieral arts and science that are available in leading universities and colleges throughout the United States.

Wentworth Military College is a private, co-educational boarding and non-boarding two-year college. A small group of students are additionally enrolled in Wentworth's high regarded United States Army ROTC Early Commissioning Program, one of only five such program in the country where college students can earn a Second Lieutenant's commission in the U.S. Army after their sophomore year.

Wentworth is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
